RUNAWAY
Runaway
I am an empty nester. It is a unique relationship to parenthood. Parent we are, and will always be, despite the fact our children rarely need, or desire, input once grown.
Add my perpetual fascination with trees, I'm constantly reminded of a section from Margaret Wise Brown's children's book - Runaway Bunny, where the young bunny threatens to become a bird and fly away. Mom answers simply, that if he does, she'll become a tree so he has a place to come home to.
Welcome to "Runaway", a series devoted to the those who have raised their families and had to let them fly.
Within it, we explore the pieces our children will rarely know about our youth - the comforts we saw were meaningful to them - the roots and branches we grew for their safety - the nagging, 'what seed to water?' for our next phase of life - and the shadows we hide in, trying to stay out of the light they need to grow.
The series invites faces with all the character that parenting adds to the reflection in the mirror. It will be captured on black and white film, with a vintage camera, for the texture, the constant battle with dust, and the sheer - 'will it turn out?' adventure of it all.
